Che cos’è il Wheels and Waves?
MA VAAAA!
Impossibile non conoscere l’Evento (E maiuscola) per i cafe racer, gli scrambleristi, e i vintage-maniaci di tutto il mondo. E anche in assenza dei numeri ufficiali della manifestazione, possiamo affermare che l’edizione 2016 è stata una vera bomba, con un numero di persone in crescita rispetto al passato e, soprattutto, con moto così belle da togliere il fiato. Sarà stato il connubio tra arte e meccanica a noi particolarmente caro, il clima amichevole e goliardico instauratosi tra i partecipanti, il sole che (miracolosamente) ha riscaldato la Cité de l’Ocean, ma se l’anno scorso abbiamo detto di esserci divertiti, quest’anno è stato semplicemente… di più!
Presenti tanti preparatori tra i più noti al mondo, e tante moto realizzate da artisti meno conosciuti ma ugualmente straordinari. Inoltre, hanno partecipato ufficialmente BMW, Ducati, Harley Davidson, Royal Enfield, Triumph e Yamaha, proponendo i loro modelli per dei test sul bellissimo tratto di costa a sud di Biarritz.

Oh c’mon!!
It is impossible not to know the Event (in capital letters) for cafe-racers, scrambler-addicted and vintage-maniacs from all over the world. Even without checking the official numbers, we can certainly say that the 2016 edition was a success, with an increasing number of participants and, above all, an overwhelming amount of stunning motorcycles. Was it the perfect match of arts and mechanics, the friendly and goliardic environment or the sun that warmed Cité de l’Ocean that made last week epic? We cannot answer but we can say that, if 2015 was a blast, 2016 was even better!
Many top moto-artists were at Wheels and Waves last week, but what caught our attention were the terrific motorcycles prepared by the less famous customizers, all designed and restored with extreme attention to details. BMW, Ducati, Harley Davidson, Royal Enfield, Triumph and Yamaha participated officially and, in many cases, let participants try the last models along the wonderful Atlantic coast].

Quest’anno il tempo di visitare gli stand è stato ridotto all’osso dalla necessità di partecipare agli eventi in programma. Il mercoledì abbiamo mangiato la polvere a El Rollo Flat Track, la gara sull’ovale di terra battuta organizzata dai Southsiders (fondatori del Wheels and Waves), e che ha visto la partecipazione di personaggi del calibro di Roland Sands con la sua Indian, dei giovani preparatori di Young Guns Speedshop, di Dimitri Coste e di Thor Drake di See See Motorcycle. La menzione d’onore va però al vincitore Marco Belli, l’Italiano che ha fatto del traverso in moto la ragione della sua vita tanto da fondare la scuola “Di Traverso” per insegnare ai motociclisti di casa nostra la derapata sportiva.
La MotArt Exhibition del giovedì sera ha chiarito a tutti quale fosse lo spirito del Wheels and Waves: i preparatori sono artisti, maestri della comunicazione visiva oltre che della meccanica. Attraverso il cacciavite e la chiave inglese emanano creatività e conoscenza, inventiva e maestria. L’esposizione, di moto ma non solo, ha voluto sottolineare il lato più eccentrico dei preparatori, consentendo loro di esprimersi non solo con le proprie realizzazioni su due ruote, ma anche tramite installazioni, graffiti, fotografie e musica. Il risultato? Una concentrazione vorticosa di arte e passione che ha travolto tutti, dai Wheels and WavERS maturi agli ultimi arrivati.
Sfortunatamente la tradizionale Punk’s Peak Race si è tenuta in forma molto limitata, a causa di una pioggia disturbatrice il venerdì, ma la Copita riservata ai cinquantini ha riscosso un notevole successo. [This year we did not have much time to walk through the exposition as many great events had be planned by the Southsiders, the Wheels and Waves’ organizers. We ate the dust on Wednesday, at El Rollo Flat Track, the race that saw Roland Sands fighting on his Indian against See See Motorcycles’ Thor Drake, who was right behind the Young Guns and Dimitri Coste, before they all changed position! But the one we really want to celebrate is Marco Belli, an Italian guy so good at dérapage that he decided to set up the school “Di Traverso” to teach flat track racing to any interested motorcyclist.
On Thursday night we headed to MotArt Exhibition that revealed us the real soul of Wheels and Waves: custom builders are artists and communication masters, not only great mechanics. They express themselves with paper and pencil, metal and screwdrivers. The exposition was aimed at highlighting these people’s creativity and knowledge, besides the ability of mastering any activity that requires an intelligent use of the hands. This is why not only motorcycles had been exposed, but also installations, graffiti and photos. Unfortunately, the traditional Punk’s Peak Race only took place for a few motorcycles due to the bad weather on Friday, but the Copita for the smaller bikes was a real success.
