Bill Phelps, il fotografo della motorcycle culture (intervista Italiano e Inglese)

Bill Phelps c’era al Wheels and Waves. Non il solito fotografo, ma una persona autentica e un grande artista. Durante il tempo trascorso insieme abbiamo capito che la dimensione professionale e personale diventano un unicum in Bill: il suo lavoro è passione, e la passione è la sua vita. Se nella sua carriera è arrivato a vincere importantissimi premi, a vedere le sue foto pubblicate sulle riviste più autorevoli e a fotografare personaggi del calibro di John Malkovich e Bradley Cooper, questo lo deve a un’attrazione fortissima verso l’arte e le moto, soprattutto inglesi e di almeno 50 anni fa. E verso quel viaggio che sua mamma fece a LeMans…

[We met Bill Phelps at Wheels and Waves and we spent enough time with him to understand that he was not one of the many photographers at the event, but a great artist and a an inspiring person. The professional and personal dimensions become an unicum in Bill. Throughout his career, he won several important prizes, got regularly published in influential magazines, earned the trust of personalities such as John Malkovich and Bradley Cooper. Quando è nata la tua passione per le auto e le moto d’epoca e special?

[When did you become passionate about cars and motorcycles?]

Non sono cresciuto tra i motori nonostante mia madre fosse appassionata di gare di auto e moto e della cultura automobilistica dell’Europa anni ’60. In quel periodo viveva in Germania e aveva acquistato una Triumph Spitfire con i suoi risparmi di impiegata d’ufficio dell’Esercito Americano. Era comune per i cittadini americani del tempo unirsi all’esercito per avere la possibilità di girare il mondo. Mia madre era una studentessa d’arte determinata ad arrivare a Firenze per vedere di persona tutto ciò da cui era così affascinata. A quanto pare, proprio in quel periodo, scoprì anche una passione innata per le auto sportive al punto di decidere di includerne una nella propria vita. Lei e una sua amica guidarono la Triumph fino a Le Mans per la 24 Ore, dormendo sul bordo della strada vicino all’auto. Una volta a destinazione, scattarono fotografie delle macchine da corsa, dei paddock e di quei momenti così magici che accompagnavano quel tipo di gare anche – per così dire – fuori dalla pista. Possiedo ancora due rullini di diapositive Kodachrome di quel viaggio.
Queste storie e queste immagini hanno plasmato la mia personalità fin da quand’ero molto piccolo e hanno sempre rappresentato una potentissima e durevole fonte di ispirazione.

[I did not grow up around machines, though my mother was passionate about European motor sport culture. She lived in Germany in the early 1960’s and bought a Triumph Spitfire with her savings from her desk job with the US Army in Wiesbaden. In those days it was common for Americans to join the military simply to have the opportunity to travel. She was an art student and was determined to make it to Florence and see the works she was most passionate about in person. It seems she discovered an innate appreciation for the sports car and decided she needed to include one in her life. She and a girlfriend drove the Triumph to Le Mans for the 24 hour race, sleeping on the ground next to the car and shooting pictures in the pits, at the track and the surrounding life. I still have two sheets of Kodachrome slides from this trip. I was exposed to the stories and the images at a very early age, they permeated my being and it was obvious how lasting and powerful they would be to me.]

[And about photography?]

La creatività è parte della mia vita fin dalla più tenera età: a scuola trascorrevo la maggior parte del tempo negli spazi dedicati all’arte dove mi davo da fare con la pittura, il disegno e la musica. Quando sono entrato in una camera oscura per la prima volta, non mi aspettavo di vivere un’esperienza così impattante: sono rimasto immediatamente affascinato dall’atmosfera, dalle luci rosse e gialle, dall’odore delle sostanze chimiche, dall’oscurità. Scattai fotografie per la prima volta proprio a scuola. Tenere in mano questa bellissima vecchia fotocamera, creare lentamente una composizione perfetta mi donava una sensazione di pace e di soddisfazione. La prima volta che sviluppai a mano un rullino e osservai le immagini formarsi nella bacinella, ecco quello fu il momento in cui la mia vita cambiò: ero completamente stregato e compresi immediatamente quale sarebbe stato il mio percorso di vita futura. Sapevo anche che il mio lavoro sarebbe stato quello di “creare” le situazioni. Non ho mai desiderato essere un giornalista o un fotografo di strada. Volevo creare delle immagini come si costruiscono le case: partendo da un’idea, da un concetto. Da lì in avanti, la macchina fotografica è stata parte integrante della mia persona. Guardando indietro, posso affermare la mia vita e il mio lavoro si unirono indissolubilmente in quelle prime ore nella camera oscura, quando mi resi conto che con quello strumento potevo creare ricordi o dare libero sfogo all’immaginazione. Questo mi fornì tutta l’ispirazione per continuare.

[I had always been active in creating and investigating. Building, painting, drawing, playing music. In school I spent most of my time in the art studios. When I made my way into the darkroom for the first time, I was not expecting the experience to be as big as it was. I instantly found interest in the equipment and the atmosphere, the smell of the chemicals, the red and yellow light, the darkness. My first experience shooting was through this class, my first time handling a camera. I found great peace in the slow pace and the crafting with this beautiful piece of equipment. When I processed my first roll of film by hand, then later saw the images appear through the salty bath, it changed my life. It was literally thrilling. I knew right then that this was going to be my path. I also knew that I would continue to craft situations and work. I never thought to be a journalist or “street photographer” I wanted to build pictures from the ground up. I knew travel would play a large role in my life and work and the camera started to be part of my being. My life and my work started to become connected in a way I could already sense in those first few hours in the darkroom. I was making memories with this tool and it inspired me to see as much as I could.]

Che cosa significa per te la parola “passione”?

[What does the word “passion” mean for you?]

La passione è qualcosa che non puoi ignorare. È qualcosa che ti dimostra e ti insegna come vivere e apprezzare tutto ciò che il mondo ha da offrire. È ciò che ti spinge oltre le barriere del conformismo e della razionalità.
Quando avevo 17 anni, mi trovavo a un party all’aperto con alcuni collezionisti di moto e di altri oggetti particolari, quando un amico del padrone di casa si presentò con una Triumph Bonneville piuttosto recente. La moto era stata trasformata con scarichi corti e manubrio dritto. Tutto ciò che non fosse funzionale ad un’estetica minimalista era stato eliminato. Lo sentii arrivare dall’imbocco della strada e rimasi folgorato dalla bellezza del mezzo, da quel rumore così gutturale e pieno di personalità. L’uomo parcheggiò la moto sull’erba del giardino: potevo sentire il ticchettio mentre il motore si raffreddava, osservare le piccole perdite d’olio formarsi, sentirla respirare nell’afa di quel sabato pomeriggio. Rimasi completamente ipnotizzato: era come se tutta la mia vita futura mi stesse scorrendo davanti agli occhi. Più avanti acquistai quella stessa moto. Ciò mi diede l’opportunità di forgiare una lunga amicizia con quest’uomo e di scoprire qualcosa che avrebbe avuto un fortissimo impatto sul resto della mia vita. Appresi competenza e saggezza infinite non solo da lui ma dalle moto che negli anni costruimmo insieme. Molti pezzi della mia vita si trovano negli angoli della sua officina per tutto il tempo trascorso lì dentro.

[Something you cannot ignore. Something that shows you and teaches you how to embrace everything the world has to offer. Something that moves you beyond explanation.
At the age of seventeen, I was at a garden party with many motorbikes and collectors of unusual things. A man arrived on a late model Triumph Bonneville. It was rather beat up from the street, short straight pipes, drag bars, stripped down. I heard it coming and was immediately struck by the beauty and unusual note, throaty and full of personality. He parked it across the garden on the grass. I could hear it ringing as it cooled down, weeping oil, slowly breathing in the heat. It hypnotized me instantly and I saw my whole life flash before my eyes. I eventually bought the very same bike from that man and not only forged a long friendship, but discovered something that would have a very powerful impact on my life forever. I learned infinite knowledge and wisdom not only from him, but from the machines we built together over the years. Many pieces of my life linger in his personal workshop from many years of time spent there.]

Come si sviluppa il tuo processo creativo?

[Where does your creative process come from?]

Grazie a una combinazione di tutti gli elementi della mia vita. Ho saputo molto presto che avrei vissuto un’esistenza creativa: già da bambino, la creatività si era manifestata in molte forme. Ho cercato dunque di mantenere una connessione e un bilanciamento tra ogni aspetto della mia vita ed è grazie a questo che sono divenuto un professionista eclettico, fotografo d’arte, di design e di architettura, di viaggi e di bambini. È sempre grazie a ciò che sono arrivato ad aprire il mio ristorante. Ciascuna giornata è un continuo processo creativo che vive e respira in me. La bellezza è un elemento fortissimo che mi apre gli occhi sul mondo; ho bisogno di cercarla, di crearla, di esporvi continuamente la mia bimba di 5 anni. Semplicemente, ne ho bisogno per respirare. In questo senso, la motocicletta è una perfetta metafora della vita: la costruzione e la guida di una moto sono esperienze al contempo fisiche e spirituali. Non si può sfuggire alle proprie forme di meditazione.

[I think from a combination of all of the above. I knew very early that I was passionate about living a creative life, it has appeared to me in many forms. I have made many choices in my life to ensure the two worlds maintain a connection and a balance. From art and photography, design and architecture, travel, children, the building of my own restaurant, it is all connected. My life is a living, breathing creative process. Beauty is a very powerful element and opens the world to me. I seek it, I create it, I expose my five year old daughter to it constantly, I need it in my life. The motorcycle is a metaphor for life I feel and holds thousands of examples of the creative process. The physical building and riding is a spiritual experience and you cannot escape the personal meditative experience, no question a creative influence.]

Come definiresti una fotografia eccezionale?

[How would you define a great photo?]

Un’immagine talmente potente da farti sentire qualcosa che durerà a lungo dentro di te.

[Persistent in its power to make you feel something, holding a lasting emotional effect.]

Viaggi moto per il tuo lavoro. Come è influenzata la tua creatività dall’esplorare continuamente nuovi luoghi e conoscere nuove persone?

[You travel the world for your work. How does constantly seeing new places and meeting new people affect your creativity?]

Il viaggio è una parte molto importante del processo creativo perché coinvolge tutti i nostri sensi. La stessa attività di muoversi da un posto all’altro, il mezzo di trasporto scelto sono tutti elementi che hanno un fortissimo impatto sulla creatività. Non si tratta solo di conoscere nuovi luoghi e persone, nuovi sapori e profumi ma di lasciarsi coinvolgere dalle esperienze che si possono vivere solo lì, in quel posto e in quel determinato momento. Di questi tempi, dimentichiamo spesso di fermarci, di fare una pausa, di rallentare e di vivere esperienze fisiche. Quando viaggio, la mia mente è aperta ed è fuori di dubbio che la mia vita e il mio processo creativo ne siano profondamene influenzati.

[It is a big part of the process. Traveling engages all the senses. From the actual event of getting from one place to another, the mode of transport – flying, driving, walking. Not only the newness of people and places, foods, smells, light, etc., but the pace in which you engage and experience. I think in these times we often forget to pause, slow down and embrace the physical world. When I travel, I am open. It will undoubtedly influence my creative process as it does my life.]

Sei il padre di una bambina molto giovane. Che cosa ti insegna tua figlia che non avresti mai immaginato?

[You are a father of a very young daughter. What is that she teaches you that you would have never imagined?]

Che il mio cuore può essere tanto aperto e generoso come è diventato negli ultimi 5 anni grazie a lei. Rivedo me stesso in mia figlia in ogni momento, e lei continua a ricordarmi che il percorso di vita che ho intrapreso è quello giusto.

[That my heart could actually be as open as it has become – because of her. I see myself in her everyday, and she continues to remind me that I am on the right path.]

Quando è nata l’idea di Cafe Moto?

[When was the idea of Cafe Moto born?]

Alcuni luoghi dei miei viaggi sono rimasti punti fermi nel mio immaginario e i “Cafe” di Parigi sono tra questi. Il “cafe” è un rifugio, un punto d’incontro, un teatro dal quale dal quale osservare lo scorrere della vita agli incroci delle strade. Prima di internet e degli smartphone, il “cafe” era il canale con cui ci sintonizzavamo con il mondo, così come le terrazze di casa erano il nostro Facebook e le diapositive il nostro Instagram. Cafe Moto nasce dal mio bisogno e desiderio di un luogo d’incontro fisico, reale e la sua creazione rappresenta la naturale evoluzione della mia passione per il “teatro della vita”. Inoltre, molti anni fa, dopo essere tornato a vivere a New York, mi sono messo alla ricerca del mio amato “cafe” di stampo parigino ma, dato che non lo trovavo, ho deciso di farmelo da me!

[I have found a few places in the world that have remained very important to me, most of them are closed, but one remains open in Paris. The “Cafe” as a pivot point, or refuge, or theater, or crossroads has always played a big part in my life. Before the internet, or mobile phones or the personal computer the way we know it now, the cafe was our channel. The terraces were our internet, contact sheets and pages of slides were our Instagram. I have always been connected to these gathering places, it is very natural and nourishing to me. Cafe Moto certainly came from this need and want. From a design standpoint, this too was a natural evolution. After moving back to New York, many years ago, I was looking for this “place”. I became frustrated in my search and decided to build my own.]
